Employee Spotlight of the Month – Alice Yu

We are excited to announce our EAG 1Source Employee Spotlight of the Month…Alice Yu! Alice recently joined 1Source to manage business analytics projects and team members as a Manager, Senior Data Architect. This includes business intelligence reporting, visualization, analysis, data process automation, and more. Want to know more about Alice? Continue reading below!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy watercolor painting and playing board games with friends. I also recently started baking sourdough bread because I saw one too many Instagram posts of other people doing it, and I wanted to prove to myself that I could bake something without swapping the salt and sugar.

In regular times, I really enjoy traveling to different countries to check out nature, and I am also going to all of the ballparks of America since I love baseball.

I’ve heard that some people here think that all I do in my free time is make reports. That is only a little true, since I am recreating famous historical graphs (like the one of Napoleon’s March to Moscow) with modern day reporting tools.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I find it very rewarding to be given the opportunity to build out the business intelligence / reporting team here at 1Source. Reporting has almost instant gratification because it allows you to very quickly get some sort of insight from data—whether that be what wells to shut in, or just letting you know that your data is so dirty that it can’t be trusted. The best thing about my job is being able to see that quick value add.

What do you find the most challenging at EAG and how has it developed your career so far?

The most challenging thing about EAG, but also one of the things that I really enjoy about it, is that oftentimes you are given the chance to create your destiny in the sense that there may not always be much explicit direction or instruction given. I started during quarantine, so it was also an anomalous situation. Being given this freedom has developed my career in unimaginable ways as I have been given the opportunity to present strategic ideas and solutions.

Exciting accomplishments on your projects.

Revamping the reporting here at EAG—consistency both on the front and back ends of the product offerings. Hearing from clients that having insight into even one small part of their data from the report recouped the cost of the entire project.

What advice do you have for prospective candidates that want to join EAG?

It was always important for me to feel like I was making a visible impact, a tangible value add. If that’s you too, then EAG could be home. The best advice I could give is—stay hungry, stay humble, and apply!

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

Apparently, my childhood was severely lacking when it came to breakfast cereals. I was recently informed of two mind-blowing things:

Firstly, Chex is apparently first and foremost a cereal from which Chex Mix was a derivative snack. I did not know this. I thought that Chex Mix was just its own delicious product.

Secondly, Rice Krispies follow the same trajectory (first a cereal and then a snack.)

I was also informed that I was pretty much the only human that didn’t know this. So, if reading this taught you something, please drop me a note so that I can feel personally vindicated in not being the only person ignorant to these facts. Much appreciated.
